In news that's delighting everyone but surprising no one, sources have confirmed that Marvel has finally signed a deal with writer and director Ryan Coogler to make Black Panther 2.
Given the cultural, critical and financial success of the first Black Panther a sequel was never in doubt.
The film shattered box office records, earning $700 million domestically, the highest for any Marvel film, and $1.3 billion worldwide. And with award season coming up many are predicting a Best Picture nomination as well as a Best Director nod for Coogler.
But with Marvel committed to keeping as much of the creative team as possible green lighting a sequel all came down to a matter of timing.
And considering how in-demand Ryan Coogler is now Marvel may have been lucky to get him the second time around.
Not much about the film has been confirmed except for the the return of Coogler as writer and director and Chadwick Boseman as the Black Panther.
Many of the details depend on the May release of The Avengers 4 (Spoiler Alert for those who haven't seen it) since many Marvel heroes including Black Panther were killed at the end of Avengers: Infinity War.
The current plan is for Coogler to write the script next year with production beginning late 2019 or early 2020, but Coogler may already have a very busy schedule next year.
Along with executive producing LeBron James' Space Jam sequel and Creed 2, Coogler and Black Panther star Michael B. Jordon are also collaborating on Wrong Answer, a drama based on a 2014 New Yorker article about the standardized test cheating scandal at Atlanta Public Schools.
No matter when the sequel finally happens though fans are more than ready.
While it's little more than a quiet confirmation at this point news of the deal has already got fans jumping.
And most couldn't wait for another dose of everything they loved about the first film.
Although Coogler's return as writer and director wasn't much of a surprise fans were still excited and hoped the studio would show him some love considering just how successful the first film was.
The only bad news? It's going to be a long time before we actually get to see it.
