Actress Chrissy Metz, 38, wore a bathing suit while on vacation this summer—it was her first time.
In a candid cover story interview for the November issue of Glamour, the This Is Us star and advocate for body positivity opened up about her struggle to feel comfortable enough to wear a bathing suit while on vacation.
In the interview she said:
I grew up wearing a T-shirt at the pool. As an adult, I was like, ‘I’m gonna find a bathing suit I like and I’m gonna wear it.'
In June, Metz did just that, finding a Lane Bryant swimsuit she liked for a vacation to Barbados with a friend.
She posted a pic of herself wearing the swimsuit to her Instagram:
Although the Primetime Emmy Award and Golden Globe Award nominated actress has received a lot of encouragement from her fans for wearing the suit, the positivity is sometimes cloaked in backhanded compliments. But she isn't letting anything stop her.
She explained to Glamour:
There were people, like, ‘Oh my God, look at you! You know I could never do that.' It’s a backhanded compliment, but I’m doing what I want to do.
But if Metz ever has any doubts about her decision, she need only look at the comments on her Instagram post:
In the interview, Metz talked about the stigma that follows overweight people:
People who’ve never been overweight don’t understand what it all entails. They think you’re just sitting in the corner and all you do is eat. My thing is, let’s get to the real issues — because the food is the symptom; it’s not the issue. Everyone’s filling a void with something.
