Jim Bunner, a journalist for the local Minnesota news station KTTC was fired on Friday just one short day after he was spotted wearing a "Make America Great Again" hat while covering a Trump rally at the Mayo Civic Center.
He was spotted by another journalist covering the event, Mark Vancleave, who had been at the rally since the previous night tweeting out footage.
He also covered some protestors in the area.
Then, he finally spotted Bunner.
Noel Sederstrom, the news director for KTTC, told BuzzFeed...
"He violated our policy so he’s no longer with us. We don’t allow our people to wear campaign clothing while on assignment."
Buzzfeed goes on to report that Bunner hadn't been shy about his political leanings, once changing his Facebook cover photo to an NRA banner, as well as posting a celebratory video from the newsroom when President Trump was inaugurated.
And things got even stranger...
People had harsh words for Bunner...
Others felt that KTTC showed bias by firing him...
People often use free speech as a catch all to justify all kinds of speech. However, free speech only guarantees us the right to say what we want without legal punishment, and even then, there are limits. It does not, however, give us the right to say what we want without any social or financial consequence. If the company Bunner worked for had company policies stating that their reporters cannot outwardly support a political party or candidate while on the job, as KTTC and most journalistic companies do, then they are well within their rights to terminate him.
