His character's loss was one of the most heartbreaking moments on TV and now fans are mourning the loss of the actor, too.
Veteran actor Scott Wilson played Hershel Green for two seasons on AMC's The Walking Dead and quickly became one of the series' most beloved characters. A kind, upstanding man, Green was in many ways the heart and soul of the show during his tenure, encouraging the group to remember their humanity even as they watched their loved ones get eaten alive by zombies. The loss of his decency in a world gone mad when his character was brutally murdered by the show's villain, the Governor, was heartbreaking.
But, in true TWD fashion, Hershel wasn't slated to stay dead forever. This past weekend at New York Comic-Con, showrunner Angela Kang's announcement that Hershel would be returning to the upcoming season of the show prompted uproarious cheers that filled Madison Square Garden.
Kang also announced that Shane, played by Jon Bernthal, and Sasha, played by Sonequa Martin-Green, would be returning.
But just hours after the exciting news, The Walking Dead Twitter account shared a sad announcement: Wilson, 76, had passed away Saturday of complications from leukemia.
"Rest in paradise, Scott," the tweet read. "We love you!"
AMC released a heartfelt statement as well:
Scott will always be remembered as a great actor and we all feel fortunate to have known him as an even better person. The character he embodied on The Walking Dead, Hershel, lived at the emotional core of the show. Like Scott in our lives, Hershel was a character whose actions continue to inform our character’s choices to this day. Our hearts go out to his wife, his family, friends and to the millions of fans who loved him. Scott will be missed.
Co-stars, colleagues, and entertainment journalists took to the internet with an outpouring of tributes to Wilson.
And fans shared their own stories and tributes:
Wilson will still appear in the upcoming season of The Walking Dead since his scenes were already finished shooting. Fans have theorized he will be part of flashback scenes that pertain to lead character Rick's exit from the story, as the actor who plays him, Andrew Lincoln, departs the show.
A fitting coda to a long and varied career.
