Jackson McKie was being wheeled into surgery when he asked his surgeon for a special favor. Dr. P. Daniel McNeely couldn't say no to his 8-year-old patient.
What was the favor, you might ask?
Jackson suffers from a rare disorder called hydrocephalus, which is a buildup of fluid in the deep cavities of the brain. Dr. McNeely was replacing a surgical shunt that helps to drain Jackson's cerebrospinal fluid.
Little Jackson wanted the armpit of his teddy bear fixed and Dr. McNeely obliged, snapping photos of himself performing the "surgery." He even used some of the leftover stitches from Jackson's surgery on his teddy bear.
Jackson's dad told CBC that after his son was reunited with his stuffed animal, he was "over the moon."
He went on:
He was so proud. He had Little Baby laying up in the hospital bed with him and everything. It made us feel better about being there.
The story warmed people's hearts.
Some wondered if the procedure was covered.
Many shared their own childhood experiences.
Some wondered how the bear was doing post-surgery.
And most just thanked Dr. McNeely for spreading some kindness in the world.
