Do not come for Cher unless she sends for you.
During a stop on the world tour she is currently embarking on at the age of 72, because she is an indomitable goddess, Cher told the crowd at Atlantic City's Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa an interesting anecdote about a certain pair of Hollywood luminaries with whom she once locked horns.
In the lead-up to the 1987 film The Witches of Eastwick, Cher was staring down the milestone of turning 40, a difficult rite of passage for any person, but especially so for a woman in Hollywood. But a wonderful birthday party had left her excited for her new decade.
"I went to sleep, dreaming these fabulous thoughts of being 40 and it was good," she said. "And I was going to get all these movies and I was just so happy."
Then the phone rang.
“'Hi, Cher, it's George Miller.'” Cher told the crowd. “He was the director of Witches of Eastwick. So he said, 'I just wanted to call and tell you that I don't want you in my movie and Jack Nicholson and I think you're too old and you're not sexy.' Good morning, 40!"
The comments left Cher “heartbroken” and in tears.
And then it got worse.
"He didn't want to hang up. He just wanted to tell me everything: 'I hate the way you walk, I hate the way you talk, I don't like the color of your hair, I don't like your eyes,” she said.
Of course times were different in 1987, but how could you ever dare to speak that way to CHER OF ALL PEOPLE?
For Cher’s part, she wasted no time putting Nicholson and Miller all the way in place.
"So, finally I was like, 'OK, look mother------,' yeah, I said the whole thing. I said, 'You didn't find me under a rock. I was nominated for an Academy Award for ‘Silkwood.’ And I got the Cannes Film Festival award for best actress for ‘Mask.’ So, goodbye!'"
On social media, people were, to say the least, vehemently Team Cher!
While others saw a lesson to be learned:
Cher would go on to win an Oscar the following year (for Moonstruck), and George Miller would eventually win one too. Twenty years later. For Happy Feet.
