It's been well over 500 days since the release of the Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel indie gem (500) Days Of Summer, but almost 10 years later the film's often heartbreaking authenticity is still resonating with fans.
A twist on the classic "boy meets girl," (500) Days Of Summer wasn't a love story, but a story about love and the sometimes painful clash between expectations and reality.
When Tom, the hopeless romantic, gets his heart broken by Summer, the girl who didn't believe in love, it's easy to sympathize with Tom's pain, and some fans still do.
Almost 10 years later one Twitter user wrote "Still haven’t forgiven Zooey Deschanel for what she did to Joseph Gordon-Levitt in 500 Days of Summer," but others were quick to point that wasn't the intended moral of the story.
Including Joseph Gordon-Levitt himself:
We've all had out hearts broken, so it's easy to sympathize, but fans remembered that Tom tried to change Summer into someone she wasn't.
While fans agreed with Gordon-Levitt that it was mostly his character's fault, they recognized Summer shared part of the blame.
For many, the story wasn't about who was to blame. What made the movie special was its realistic depiction of a messy relationship.
After all, it wasn't a love story; it was a story about love.
