By Alex Maxx

Downton Abbey is back, and bigger than ever.

Following the popular television series ending in 2015, it has been confirmed that the first-ever Downton Abbey movie is in the making. There has been no official release date for the film, but filming and formal production is set to start in September. The film will be distributed by Focus Features and Universal Pictures.

Focus Features Chairman Peter Kujawski said the following:

"Since the series ended, fans of 'Downton' have long been waiting for the Crawley family’s next chapter. We’re thrilled to join this incredible group of filmmakers, actors and bringing back the world of 'Downton'; to the big screen."

Julian Fellowes, creator of the original series, wrote the screenplay and is slated as producer for the feature film.

Downton Abbey took to Twitter to announce the good news:

This will be the first feature film based on the British drama series, which originally aired on PBS.
