White Man Badgers Black Family, Asking If They Have Showered Before Using Hotel Pool

By Dana Levinson

Carle Wheeler is a single mother from Dallas. She was on vacation in Pasadena California with her 5-year-old daughter when a white man approached her; Carle and her daughter are both black.

She was going into the pool with her child when the man asked whether or not they had taken a shower before getting into the water.

According to Wheeler, he approached because...

"...people carry diseases into the pools and he doesn’t want the health department to shut the pool down."

She recounted the story on her Facebook, along with posting a video of a confrontation with the man...

In the video, the man says...

"I simply asked them if they showered. Because that’s part of the rules. And I don’t know about you guys, but I’m tired of getting into pools that people consider baths."

Which received this retort from Wheeler...

"You didn’t ask anyone else."

She went on to point out that there were other people in the pool, who happened to be white, that this man never approached.

This is yet another instance of the way white people see black people as suspicious, even when they are doing seemingly ordinary and everyday things.

Of course, one of the most high profile recent incidents was when the police were called on two black men waiting for a business meeting in Starbucks. There was also the grad student who called the police on a fellow Yale grad student who was napping in their dorm lounge.

All of these instances have given rise to the hashtag #LivingWhileBlack. People are sharing their similar infuriating experiences on Twitter.
