We know you were wondering why the adorable Prince George only dons shorts. Who hasn’t been? So, we’re happy to report that British etiquette expert William Hanson indulged everyone’s curiosity and finally explained why Prince George, son of Kate Middleton and Prince William, only wears shorts.
In an interview with Harper’s Bazaar, Hanson explained that “It’s a very English thing to dress a young boy in shorts. Trousers are for older boys and men, whereas shorts on young boys is one of those silent class markers that we have in England.”
Does that mean, as a grown adult, I should not be wearing cargo shorts?
Hanson continues to increase the divide between royal children and “middle class” children by further explaining, “Although times are changing, a pair of trousers on a young boy is considered quite middle class - quite suburban.” As if we didn’t feel like we already have no connection with the Royal Family, he goes on to say “No self-respecting aristocrat or royal would want to be considered suburban. Even the Duchess of Cambridge.”
There is something exquisitely condescending about Hanson’s explanation, but to be fair, Prince George does sport some stylish shorts. And he is pretty cute, so we’ll ignore the “suburban” dig. Based on Hanson’s breakdown of child-dressing etiquette, George will be donning shorts until around eight years old.
Hanson does further explain the choice of attire, stating it dates back to 16th-century traditions. “A newborn baby would be dressed in a gown for their first year or two and then he was ‘breeched’ and wore articles of clothing that more resembled shorts or trousers than dresses. The modern habit of upper-class families choosing to dress their boys in shorts will deliberately hark back to a bygone age.”
The most brilliant thing to come of the focus on the young prince’s shorts is a tweet from a Prince George parody account that likely gives us a look into the mind of the wee lad.
There’s also the “whore wore it better” comparison between Prince George and Lebron. Quite frankly, we’re curious what the popular opinion is.
