Willie Davis, a retired US Navy Officer living in Pennsylvania, was diagnosed with stage 4 squamous cell carcinoma, a type of skin cancer. When caught in an early stage, squamous cell carcinoma is often curable, but unfortunately, by the time Davis was diagnosed, there was little hope for treatment. With this in mind, Davis, 66, held a yard sale over a few weekends in August so that he could raise enough money to be buried next to his parents in Culpepper, VA.
After learning his disease was terminal, Davis said he felt "desperate." He started selling all his old vinyls and other worldly possessions, and then, one fateful day, a visit from two strangers would alleviate his struggle.
David Dunkleberger and Ed Sheets found the yard sale by total happenstance on August 4th.
“After looking over the yard and noticing a little bit of everything, we bought a couple things,” Dunkleberger said.
After paying, Davis asked them to spread the word, as he was raising money for a funeral.
When the two men asked whose funeral, Davis simply replied "mine."
“We’ve all thought our lives were bad and we are going thru rough times, but imagine worrying about selling all of your belongings before you pass away, just so you can be buried with your parents,” Dunkleberger said.
With newfound determination, Dunkleberger and Sheets created a GoFundMe page to help Davis raise the money.
“He’s done a lot of serving our country, so we wanted to kind of return the favor to him so that, again, his last days could be a little less hectic, a little more peaceful to him,” Sheets said.
The GoFundMe's goal was set at $40,000 for all funeral costs.
The page is currently at $52,260.
