Tina Fey's screenplay of the 2004 hit movie is getting a much-anticipated musical treatment, and Millennials, who've adopted the film's dialogue for daily discourse, are especially excited.
Mean Girls fans may soon be singing quotes from the movie.
In the promo clip, the girls talk about the play:
Karen: It's a musical — people talk and sing and move their bodies all at the same time.
Regina: They know what a musical is, Karen. They're not idiots.
Gretchen: How can you talk and sing at the same time?
If the promo is any indication, audiences are in for a riotous evening of theater.
The Plastics: Broadway veterans Taylor Louderman as Regina George, Ashley Park as Gretchen Weiners, and Kate Rockwell as Karen Smith.
Fey told EW she didn't expect the oft-quoted film to become such a mega hit. A progression to the stage seemed inevitable. She said:
It was probably my husband, Jeff [Richmond, a composer who worked on 30 Rock], who said, "You know what? This could work as a musical." And I trusted him to know that, having that background.
Mean Girls will have its premiere at the National Theater in Washington D.C. from Oct. 31 to Dec. 3 before opening night on Broadway at the August Wilson Theater on April 8.
The hype is real, people:
