Actor and star of CW's The Flash Grant Gustin wasn't putting up with any nonsense when it came to his body. Gustin took to Instagram to shut down talk about his lean physique and a recently leaked photo of the new Flash costume.
In his post he said:
I've had 20+ years of kids and adults telling me or my parents I was too thin. I've had my own journey of accepting it. But there's a double standard where it's ok to talk s--- about a dudes (sic) body.
The leaked photo has some people scratching their heads over what there was to criticize.
This was the leaked photos of the suit for CW's the Flash, Season 5. In response to seeing the new suit the internet dragged it through the mud and back. Some fans even chose to body shame Grant Gustin saying gross thing's about his figure. pic.twitter.com/laYB4XVPIE— Updates/Drama/Opinion Page (@Stanningteaa) August 8, 2018
Body shaming just for this photo of his face and chest?— Bárbara Wagmacker (@baahwagmacker) August 9, 2018
But some folks are saying it started with this Instagram post.
Insider info ⚡️⚡️ - - CORRECTION: his neck doesn’t show. It’s under his chin that does! I was speechless for a good half hour that i couldn’t type correctly. I was able to see a test photo of the suit and i really liked it. When they reveal that promo pic for the suit reveal, it is gonna feed me for a good 2 months until the show is back. However, One thing i didn’t like with how the new suit looked was how small the emblem was on his chest. But everything else made up for it. Also it’s just a test and i hope they modified that. This suit looks amazing and i can’t wait for everyone to see it!!! ⚡️ - - Art on right by @andypoondesign
People posted comments saying they thought the suit made Gustin look too skinny.
In all fairness, this writer had to dig for quite some time to find the above three comments.
Still, fans appreciated Gustin being willing to talk about the "double standard" of body shaming.
Leave Grant Gustin alone guys! He’s going to leave social media completely if you guys don’t stop picking on him and bullying him. Body shaming him for being skinny is really low. I was body shamed growing up for being skinny. I know how it feels 🙄😔— I ❤️ CANDICE PATTON (@candicesgirl22) August 8, 2018
Grant Gustin deserves better than to be shamed on the image of his body. You assholes really have to go attack one of the kindest people ever?? Leave the internet and go back to whatever hole you crawled out of because you're definitely not being useful 🤷♀️— Kayleigh | stream my pace (@defljbs) August 9, 2018
Others didn't rush to take up Gustin's cause, thinking the actor should check his privilege before speaking out.
y’all this entire article and the fact that cnn gave him more of a platform than actresses who actually get harassed on the daily just bc they’re women and women of color is just a perfect example proving why there is a NOT a double standard for men and women— nardos (@irisbcrry) August 8, 2018
Candice Patton gets racial abuse daily. Where is her article? Or Anna Diop’s. Instead you write this white privilege article, smh.— Liz|💜⚡️ (@CPflashFan) August 8, 2018
It's not a 'double standard' when it's actually the standard...women are body shamed daily in Hollywood and DCTV itself. There is no body diversity in the @GBerlanti's #Arrowverse.— Soph 🤗 (@Sophia7470) August 9, 2018
Not to mention where is the article about the racial abuse thrown at his female co-star daily.
Grant, there is certainly a double standard when it comes to how men's and women's bodies are treated in media. But I promise you that men are not the ones on the losing end of that double standard.— Red Crest (@Redcrest) August 8, 2018
Gustin has since deleted his Twitter account.
