We live in a time where people shouldn’t be afraid to reject someone, but the experience of Bailey Cantrell speaks volumes about how we’re not quite there.

While minding her own business in a gas station parking lot, Bailey was approached by an unidentified man. He asked for her number, a request that she politely declined. That wasn’t enough for the man, however, who asked a second time. Again, she declined.

Still, he persisted, so she told him she was gay. It was at this point that the man was “triggered.”

“After I declined, still a little bit mad, then the second I declined the third time and said ‘I’m gay, I’m just not interested,’ that’s when it triggered him and he got very aggressive,” Cantrell explained.

Security footage from the gas stationed captured the man assaulting Cantrell. First, he is seen jumping on her car and kicking in her windshield. Unable to drive off due to the smashed windshield, not to mention the glass that had gotten in her eye, Cantrell backed up enough to shake him off the car, but her attacker persisted.

The man continued to assault Cantrell’s car, causing her to panic and get out. That’s when he turned his attention to her, grabbing and pulling her away from the vehicle. The video shows other bystanders in the parking lot, but nobody appears to be calling the police as the attack was going on.

“The only thing I was thinking while this was going on is he might have a weapon, he might have a knife, a gun, I don’t know,” she told WAVE in an interview. “So pretty much just flailing every limb to get out of his grip.”

Cantrell did eventually break free and local authorities were called, but no arrests have been made.

The woman lived near the gas station, but the attack has since prompted her to move in with her parents.
