There are several time-honored arguments all music lovers have. Were the Beatles as revolutionary as we like to remember them? Was Elvis amazing or just amazing at stealing the moves and sounds of artists of color and repackaging them for white audiences? Both?

There is perhaps no argument more likely to turn into a music riot than this one:

Listen, some covers are so iconic that they might as well be the original. Aretha's cover of "Respect," Amy Winehouse's cover of "Valerie," Debbie Tiffany's version of "I Think We're Alone Now," Sinead's version of "Nothing Compares" — all iconic. There are covers we'd like to forget happened at all. Like Avril Lavigne doing Metallica or Mariah Carey covering Def Leppard. But this is all subjective so of course it all devolves into a passionate musical battle royale.

Twitter jumped in on that fight SO FAST. There was no holding back.

So, yeah. Twitter is probably still fighting about it. You can join in the melee here
