The owner of Tucson's El Charro restaurant, Carlotta Flores, wasn't having a good week. She'd had her purse stolen and her faith in humanity was waning, but then an unexpected surprise in the mail renewed her faith—and put a substantial amount of cash in her pocket.
Flores received a letter in the mail from an anonymous person who claimed to have worked in the restaurant 20 years ago. In the letter, the woman wrote that she was a terrible waitress and was fired, but before that, she had been stealing from her employer. To make up the amount she stole, plus a lot of interest, the person enclosed $1,000.
In the letter the former waitress wrote:
One of the waiters I worked with had encouraged me to 'forget' to ring in a few drinks a shift and pocket the cash. And for some stupid reason, I did it. I grew up in the church, I knew better. I hadn't stolen a dime before then, nor have I since. It's been 20 years, but I still carry great remorse. I am very sorry that I stole from you. Please accept my apology + this money as a repayment + 20 years of interest. May God forever bless you+ your family.
Flores told CNN about the letter:
I don't know where she's at or who she is but I will tell you one thing. I hope that she's read or has seen what an impact this has made not only on me, my family, my business but where it will go in the future so I hope she keeps looking to see what we're doing with it.
A family member posted a photo of the letter and cash on Facebook.
It's never too late to make amends.
The story touched many who needed to renew their faith in humanity.
This resonates in my heart, Dan. We always have a chance to renew ourselves—to mend bridges, reach higher, be kinder, be more creative, + connect with one another. To do the right things with quiet appreciation—I recommit. Thanks for the reminder.— Linnea Grace (@LndofHpeandDrms) August 2, 2018
It's to see that some still got conscious!!! Kudos— JOHN A ANAGNOSTARAS (@ioannis8100) August 2, 2018
It's so encouraging to know that there are people with a conscience - and who listen to and act on it. This made my day.— Winter (@Random3735) August 2, 2018
Of course, there were some people looking to make a quick buck.
Thankful former employee, hey I think you worked me too. You wouldn’t happen to have any money for me?— stang1958 (@stings1958) August 2, 2018
