According to WWD, beauty guru to the fashionistas Pat McGrath has built her cosmetic company, Pat McGrath Labs, into an estimated $1 billion empire after recently closing a $60 million deal with investment firm Eurazeo Brands. McGrath has taken her two-year-old company into the stratosphere, outpacing projections for Kylie Jenner’s Kylie Cosmetics, which Forbes recently estimated at about $800 million.
Born in Northampton, UK, McGrath launched her brand in 2016 after becoming a mainstay in the fashion industry, creating some of the most iconic looks on the runway.
According to HuffPost, she has been called:
...the most influential makeup artist in the world by Anna Wintour and was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire for services to the fashion and beauty industry by Queen Elizabeth II.
Pat McGrath Labs was a success right out of the gate, becoming a full-fledged hit at Sephora stores.
People were quick to congratulate her—and throw a little shade:
Hell yes @patmcgrathreal an actual #selfmade goddess and beauty billionaire! Pat is the creatrix of the most iconic looks we have all seen amongst runways + editorials over the last 15+ years! I’m so proud of this inspiring black business woman. 💋✨💫✨ pic.twitter.com/PiOLFxIWZj— BRI LUNA (@YungKundalini) July 18, 2018
The Forbes cover story projected Jenner would hit the "self-made" billionaire mark soon, but she was soon eclipsed by McGrath's success.
And people had questions:
Take a good look at her skin....and you'll find the answer— Kayode Modupe-Ojo (@kayodemodupeojo) July 19, 2018
When Pat McGrath Labs hits $1billion valuation, surpassing Kylie Jenner Cosmetics and is actually self made but she doesn’t get a Forbes cover? Bloop, love a double standard. NOT! 😅— MISS BLANKS (@miss_blanks) July 17, 2018
Some wished the two women's names were never even mentioned together:
Literally for over 20 years every single most iconic makeup look in haute couture was by her. She does the biggest pret a porter shows as well. This woman in in the league of her own. She’s to makeup artists what Rolls-Royce Sweptail is to supercars. pic.twitter.com/Dv6dmOjNWB— SilverAgatka 🗝 (@SilverAgatka) July 19, 2018
WHAT WE ARE NOT GOING TO DO IS COMPARE KYLIE JENNER TO PAT MCGRATH. YES THEY BOTH HAVE SUCCESSFUL BEAUTY LINES BUT MS. MCGRATH'S EMPIRE IS NOT BASED ON BEING A CELEBRITY INFLUENCER OR HER ACCESS TO MONEY. IT WAS BUILT ON YEARS OF HUSTLE, TALENT, AND THOUSANDS OF BEATS. The Pat McGrath vs Kylie Jenner framing is so reductive, boring and frankly insulting to McGrath’s work and legacy. McGrath is a legend and one of the most respected and influential makeup artist’s in the industry.— Christiana Amarachi Mbakwe (@Christiana1987) July 19, 2018
It may be worth noting that Forbes predicted Jenner, 20, would be the "youngest self-made billionaire ever, male or female, trumping Mark Zuckerberg, who became a billionaire at age 23," something for which McGrath, 48, wasn't in the running. McGrath's win comes after years of paying her dues in the fashion industry.
Many people wanted to celebrate both women's accomplishments:
I like how you had to compare it to Kylie instead of uplifting both women!— Liberated (@Infatuation23) July 19, 2018
Frankly irritated by people comparing Pat McGrath to Kylie Jenner.— Jude Jagger (@JudeJagger) July 19, 2018
1. Pat and Kylie are incredible bosses in their own right and have a lot more ahead of them.
2. They're both successful women in an industry with enough room for them BOTH and MORE.
3.Why compare them????
But today is about McGrath's accomplishments. Let's celebrate her win and congratulate her on a job well done, shall we? #WomanPower
I’ve met her a couple of times now and she’s SO sweet! Pat has worked hard and I can’t think of anyone who’s more deserving of this success.— Teman Evans (@EvansTeman) July 19, 2018
