For those who don't know, Candace Owens is the founder of Red Pill Black, a website that tries to sell conservatism to a young black audience. Before this, she was crowdfunding a website called Social Autopsy that would 'expose the internet's bullies'. However, the site got shut down before it took off amid accusations that it would encourage doxing, meaning stripping internet users of anonymity for revenge.
She is also the director of Urban Engagement for Turning Point USA, a conservative group that has kept a 'professor watchlist' of supposed college professors who 'discriminate' against conservatives, and has been accused of racial bias and illegal campaign activity during the 2016 election. Also, she is now one of Kanye West's favorite people.
On Saturday, he tweeted:
Which received this breathless response from Owens herself:
I’m freaking out. @kanyewest ....please take a meeting with me. I tell every single person that everything that I have been inspired to do, was written in your music.— Candace Owens (@RealCandaceO) April 21, 2018
I am my own biggest fan, because you made it okay. I need you to help wake up the black community. https://t.co/Uz1nB9K0Oz
And Roseanne Barr:
People pointed out the harmful and problematic things Owens has said and done:
Candace Owens is a far right media personality who got famous by appearing on the conspiracy site Infowars and calling herself a "Red Pill black" — a term popularized on alt-right/men's rights message boards that is basically an antonym for "woke" https://t.co/8f2EN5kt7Y— Caleb Ecarma (@calebecarma) April 21, 2018
As I've said many times before, if I had no dignity I would be a very rich man by now. Candace Owens is making money off of denigrating black folks for her mostly white audience. Same as that Noir guy, same as Stacey Dash, same as Allen West etc. https://t.co/ljA5kgvcS1— Herb Lawrence (@Ecnerwal23) April 21, 2018
Candace Owens has proven to be anti-Black, anti-LGBTQ and fact-hating.— Raquel Willis (@RaquelWillis_) April 21, 2018
(Honestly, there are so many more descriptors.)
For Kanye to align himself with her is messy and dangerous.
Others put Kanye on blast:
Did Kanye just really speak positively about Candace Owens? Hell just froze over?— southernvalleygirl (@BillingsLorrie) April 21, 2018
I really defended Kanye West. I love Kim and I think he is a good artist but he's gone way too far at this point. Candace Owens? Really? What would his mother say about that? He's a joke and a caricature of himself at this point.— Shady McGrady (@downtheline18) April 21, 2018
The truth is y’all will continue to canonize Kanye, buy his shoes and albums. In fact, you’ll probably do so in higher numbers now.— Raquel Willis (@RaquelWillis_) April 21, 2018
I rarely quote the Bible, but that whole bit about false idols carries a lot of truth.
While conservatives cheered him on:
Kanye is going through a re-awakening. They tried to keep him down, but he’s a born rebel. I have a renewed respect.— Victor Vicarious ⚡️ (@VictorVicariouz) April 21, 2018
