Fans of Disney musicals were treated to a glimpse of what it was like during the recording sessions for Disney's classic and much beloved Beauty and the Beast (1991), on Wednesday.
The rare, behind-the-scenes footage—posted on Entertainment Weekly—features Hollywood legends Angela Lansbury and Jerry Orbach as they work together on the fan-favorite "Be Our Guest."
The clip is from a forthcoming documentary called Howard about playwright and lyricist Howard Ashman (also featured in the clip). Famously working in collaboration with composer Alan Menken, Ashman penned the lyrics to Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, and Aladdin (used posthumously).
At age 39, he tragically passed away from complications from AIDS, just days after the first screening of Beauty and the Beast. The documentary is a tribute to his artistic contributions.
Here's the clip posted by Eric Deggans of NPR:
As a stone Jerry Orbach fan, I love this clip from Howard -- a documentary about lyricist Howard Ashman -- showing Jerry and Angela Lansbury recording the legendary "Be Our Guest" from Disney's 1991 classic, Beauty and the Beast. https://t.co/tIwtibOzik— Eric Deggans at NPR (@Deggans) April 11, 2018
Fans ate it up:
Writer Manuel Betancourt loved it:
After seeing Angela Lansbury and Jerry Orbach perform "Be our guest" in the clip you shared, I am shaken. I don't think I can take all the emotions...— German Munoz (@GermanMun) April 11, 2018
Like Deggans, there was no shortage of fans of the late Jerry Orbach on Twitter:
Jerry was (for me) the definitive Sky Masterson, City Center, 1966— Ben Yagoda (@byagoda) April 11, 2018
And how could anyone not love Angela Lansbury as Mrs. Potts?
The clip also got fans of 2017's live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast wanting to see some similar footage of Ewan McGregor and Emma Thompson recording their version of the song:
I hope the DVD/Blu Ray bonus features of Beauty and the Beast has Ewan McGregor recording Be Our Guest because I'm sure it is quite animated— Love, Kyle (@kbaileyjava2) March 31, 2017
Emma Thompson too please. And just 6 seconds Ian McKellen sings— Love, Kyle (@kbaileyjava2) March 31, 2017
People seem to have a special fondness for Beauty and the Beast—proof that it is indeed like the film's title song claims a, "Tale as old as time."
It's what I remember as a child. Still one of my favorites. The late Jerry Orbach as Lumier. Angela Lansbury as Mrs. Potts. Y'know, Disney can make all the animated movies live action, but you'll never forget the originals. They'll always be a part of you. pic.twitter.com/vvvAkIr8kS— Only Jedi Master Hamster (@HamsterSkywalkr) April 4, 2018
A little love for the song across the years:
Directed by Don Hahn, Howard premieres at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York City this month.
