As soon as Prince Harry and Meghan Markle got engaged, people immediately started wondering about the guest list. A rumor began to spread that the Obama's were going to be invited, however the Trump's were not. President Obama and Prince Harry met during an Oval Office visit by the royal in October of 2015, and became close during the 2017 Invictus Games. This of course, only added fuel to the fire. The truth is, if the wedding is not deemed an 'affair of state,' politicians, including British ones, are often not invited to Royal Weddings to avoid the optics of trying to curry political favor.
Well, this past Tuesday, first it was reported that the wedding would not be deemed an 'affair of state' because Prince Harry is not in direct line for the throne...
Sources say Prince Harry is not a direct heir to the throne there is no need to have such a formal guest list.— Rebecca English (@RE_DailyMail) April 10, 2018
In additional, St George’s Chapel, where the couple will wed on May 19, is much smaller than Westminster Abbey, where the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge tied the knot.
Kensington Palace said: It has been decided that an official list of political leaders – both UK & international - is not required for Prince Harry and Ms. Markle's wedding. Her Majesty's Government was consulted on this decision, which was taken by The Royal Household.— Rebecca English (@RE_DailyMail) April 10, 2018
Then, it came out that not only were the Obamas not attending, neither was President Trump, nor even the British Prime Minister, Theresa May...
Obamas will not be attending Royal wedding, a Palace sportsman tells @CNN, as no elected officials were invited. But people close to Obamas and Palace say “the couples look forward to seeing each other soon.” (This avoids protocol issues of inviting one president, not another.)— Jeff Zeleny (@jeffzeleny) April 10, 2018
President Obama & his wife, Michelle, will NOT be guests at Prince Harry & Meghan Markle’s wedding next month - and nor will Donald Trump.— Rebecca English (@RE_DailyMail) April 10, 2018
The couple have decided not to invite any political leaders both from the UK & abroad, which means that even Br PM Theresa May is uninvited.
People felt pretty bummed about it...
Barack Obama is now a private citizen, not a Head or State, and Harry is personal friends with both of the Obamas. He isn’t the heir and this isn’t a state occasion so why couldn’t he invite them?! 😣— Lila Fowler 🎀 (@LilaFowler2017) April 11, 2018
But mostly, people just blamed President Trump...
, no one was said but this is all because of the filth Trump!— Charles Howard (@lordknows262) April 11, 2018
Someone with a very bad disposition just get all Head of States sidelined.— 💫Patsy💥Dryden 🍀🌊🌸 (@Patta47cake) April 11, 2018
It’s more likely because they don’t want to have to invite @POTUS and @FLOTUS too! That would look bad on #HarryAndMeghan so this way, everyone is equal. Personally, I wouldn’t want Trump there either. I would have liked @BarackObama & @MichelleObama to be there though 👍🏻— 🐬Elek🐬 (@Dakota16West) April 10, 2018
Pretty sad they’re having to base their guest list around not having to invite a thin skinned, racist and narcissistic arsehole.— Twinkle (@mrsangiecox) April 11, 2018
And Bernadine thought of a good work-around...
Yeah, I was wondering how they were going to get around inviting Obamas/Trudeaus & not Trump. I mean who'd want a protest at their wedding? BUT if they called it the UK's WH Correspondence Dinner he'd never go, lol! 😂— Bernadine Joel (@BernadineJoel) April 10, 2018
One can only hope...
