Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) is a former congresswoman and a retired U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel. In 2004 she lost both legs while serving in Iraq when a rocket-propelled grenade hit the helicopter she was flying. Duckworth continued to serve after her injury and retired from the Army in 2014.
The conservative commentary site RedState got a little too pithy for Duckworth's taste recently. On Tuesday they were discussing the case of Miguel Perez, a veteran of the war in Afghanistan, who never gained U.S. citizenship but is a legal permanent resident and now faces deportation. Senator Duckworth is in support of Perez staying in the United States but the folks over at RedState feel quite differently.
Duckworth is quoted as saying:
I was alarmed to learn this morning that Mr. Perez Montes’ removal from the United States is imminent and may be carried out today at O’Hare International Airport, As ICE continues to hastily and aggressively pursue the deportation of this Veteran who served our nation in uniform, I am urgently appealing to you to stay his deportation and personally review his case. Beyond the injustice ICE has laid on Mr. Perez Montes in his deportation, I would find it shocking to learn that he will potentially be leaving with nothing but the clothes on his back. This is a deplorable way to treat a Veteran who risked his life in combat for our nation.
And when RedState responded, they said:
Unfortunately, Duckworth really doesn’t have a leg to stand on in making this argument.
The Senator couldn't resist a little clapback of her own. The following day she tweeted:
And people couldn't get enough:
And many more I have 3 family members that said they love it as well.— Kellye Cervantez💙🌊 (@CaliGirl4life61) March 29, 2018
Others were disgusted by RedState:
I can't believe how low these people are willing to go and after a combat veteran injured in the war no less.— Mary Cummins 💎 (@MaryCummins1) March 29, 2018
Their comment said nothing about you Senator, but volumes about them, none of it good.— Steve Lachaga (@SteveLachagaNYL) March 29, 2018
Thank you for your clear voice and for your service.
Conservatives. You really can't get any lower. Insulting people who were willing to put their lives on the line for all of us. Steep slowly in your self-made stew of loathing and despair. Your time is just about up. There will be hell to pay.— Debi Franklin 🍸 (@DebiFranklin1) March 29, 2018
I may disagree with some people , but this is unacceptable. Shes a combat veteran.— tina johnson (@alvinant) March 29, 2018
But mostly, people offered words of support for the Senator:
You are one awesome woman. We are so very lucky to have you!— Sarah writes and doesn't sleep (@shehulkjd) March 29, 2018
Kaboom! Tammy, you are simply the best. Thank you for your service to the nation, in and out of uniform. You define leadership, patriotism and service and are a role model to those of us with and without disabilities. Thanks for fighting the good fights!— Stephen Ondra (@StephenOndra) March 29, 2018
Senator you are what we need in this world. Such a classy response.— la résistance (@eshh85) March 29, 2018
