Known for inserting Easter eggs that allude to current affairs into its introduction, HBO's Silicon Valley took a dig at Facebook on Sunday during its season premier — and it was Michael Kelso BURN-worthy.
The idea was most likely conceived last fall when Facebook faced allegations of allowing Russian propaganda on its platform. Rolling it out now when Mark Zuckerberg is under attack yet again — this time for the Cambridge Analytica controversy — was a stroke of genius on executive producer Mike Judge's part.
Here's the clip in case you missed it:
The only problem was that people got really caught up on the fact that the lettering is not Russian. It's mostly Cyrillic and still closely resembles the word "Facebook," merely nodding to the general look of the Russian alphabet.
Apparently this was a lot for people to overcome:
I'm sorry, but that's not Russian, just a bunch of Cyrillic letters. It's gibberish— white_bada (@whitebadaboom) March 26, 2018
Looks like a jumble of Greek and Russian letters with a French Ç thrown in, but it really isn't anything at all, certainly not Russian.— Meridy Migchelbrink (@MeridyM) March 26, 2018
Which really ticked off a lot of other people who felt the joke came off just fine:
Not sure which is more funny.— N tro P (@JazzyFlame) March 26, 2018
This actual finding or the responses you get pointing out it's not a Russian word.
Like the SV Easter egg crowd that did this cared if it was an actual Russian word.
These are the type of people you have to explain knock knock jokes to. 🤤
the lack of care taken is actually somewhat offensive because russian alphabet does not belong to putin and his cronies. this is a super lazy joke.— Stepan (@st3p4n_overseas) March 27, 2018
Everyone who keeps stating how it's not really Russian translation, try to not read so deep into it. You guys sound like those ppl who need jokes explained to you.— 0xgod (@0xTHEgod) March 27, 2018
That was great burn but they spelled it wrong. This is how you would actually spell it in Cyrillic ФЕЙСБООК. A few of the letters used are not even from the Russian Alphabet.— Arthur Avetisyan (@KingArthurLA) March 26, 2018
But most fans of the show were all about it:
The Silicon Valley intro writers are always on point. It's fun to watch the changing relative sizes of the logos.— Kevin (@ktneely) March 26, 2018
It's not Russian, just Cyrillic characters that look like "Facebook". Nonetheless, it's still funny and a zing. BURN!— Innie Minnie (@Succulent_Freak) March 26, 2018
That was NOT an accident. You know nothing about Mike Judge if you think he isn't cold and calculated. Dude uses elite satire, and has a pair of balls.— [\/] ▲ «|» «|» (@mn253) March 27, 2018
