Young activists from London came together to form the group Legally Black and together they are taking on both the British and American film industries with a brilliant campaign. Replacing white actors with images of Black actors in the staring roles on movie and television posters is having a serious impact. Each poster is captioned with the phrase:
"If you're surprised, it means you don't see enough black people in major roles."
The group is using the posters to "combat the way black people are portrayed in the media."
Some of the posters the group recreated include, Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason, Dr. Who, and Titanic.
Liv Francis-Cornibert, one of the teens involved with the project had this to say about their goals:
We basically want better representation of black people in media. It's tackling issues such as under-representation first of all, but also misrepresentation.
The newly developed campaign is already having a big impact.
Now let's start seeing the film and television industry make the changes the people want to see.
