While some of us are still reeling from Zac Efron's delicious turn as Phillip Carlyle opposite Hugh Jackman's P.T. Barnum in the Greatest Showman (critics be damned—audiences loved it!) he's already moved on to bigger and decidedly ickier things. Efron's been hard at work filming his next big project, Joe Berlinger’s Ted Bundy film, Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil, and Vile, in which he plays none other than the so-called "handsome devil" himself. And while we might all be trying to come to grips with the possibility of seeing our beloved Baywatch hero transformed into a serial killer, Efron seems genuinely stoked to be playing the part.
Which is evidenced by the photos and behind-the-scenes video he shared on his Instagram a few days ago:
Efron seems psyched to be working with Maze Runner and Skins star Kaya Scodelario, who plays Bundy’s ex-wife, Carole Ann Boone:
The film was written by Michael Werwie, who won the prestigious Academy Nicholl Fellowship in Screenwriting for his script. The story is told from the perspective of Bundy's longtime love Elizabeth Kloepfer, played by Lily Collins.
The movie is expected to be a fresh take on the shocking ripped-from-the-headlines tale.
And it seems fans cannot wait to see Efron take a stab at killing off his boy-next-door image:
When everyone’s excited that Zac Efron is on campus but you’re more excited because it’s Zac Efron as Ted Bundy and you’re not sure what that says about you as a person— Emily Borst (@emilymarieb1) February 18, 2018
I wondered why they parted Zac Efron hair on the opposite side of Ted Bundy hair, but apparently Bundy parted it on either side. I like that they chose the opposite side from how Zac parts it. Those details add to the confidence I have in the movie #extremelywicked @joeberlinger— Arnold and Minnie (@twinkle_towne) February 17, 2018
Though the material is dark, Efron seems to be enjoying not only making the movie but sharing the behind-the-scenes secrets with fans:
