During a visit to a Scottish charity in Edinburgh with fiancé Prince Harry, Meghan Markle made waves when she broke royal protocol by hugging the charity's co-founder Alice Thompson.
Alice reportedly told Meghan she was “deeply inspired” by her speech during the UN Women Conference in 2015, and Meghan, caught up in the moment broke protocol and gave her a hug. The encounter quickly made international headlines.
As it turns out though, a specific royal protocol doesn't exist.
Indy100 reached out to a spokesperson from Clarence House, the current residence of Price Charles. When asked if the rule against hugging existed the spokesperson "laughed and added 'not that I am aware of'".
"There are no obligatory codes of behaviour when meeting The Queen or a member of the Royal Family."
Although it appears Meghan didn't breech any protocol some were still rather upset by it.

Am I the only one being fed up with her breaking the rules? Does she want to be a royal or not? Harry can you stop being blind and stop all this non sense?

Yet again this thick woman thinks she can do what she wants, I think she thinks she can grab headlines as if she was still in the usa, I so hope this marriage doesn't last
While others doubted if the moment was genuine.
ignored a royal protocol???? or an obvious drama for PR purposes to be tagged as the "caring, down to earth meghan"— Mariko (@mariko741) February 14, 2018
But many remembered the "people's princess", and appreciated Meghan for her refreshing attitude and compassion.
Whether Meghan broke protocol or not, she still has some time before it technically counts.
