The International Olympic Committee (IOC) was very close to forcing Team USA's Women's Ice Hockey goalies to take off their helmets, which they were concerned might be too "political."
Most Twitter users thought this line of thought was silly.
The IOC rules were pretty clear on the issue:
“No item may feature the wording or lyrics from national anthems, motivational words, public/political messaging or slogans related to national identity.”— 🦅🇺🇸🕊 (@HMSPitts) February 13, 2018
By IOC rules, the Statue of Liberty should be fine.
It’s the most international symbol we have🗽🇺🇸https://t.co/sxtWVjyzpW
The committee decided to allow Team USA's goalies to keep their helmets, and Americans breathed a sigh of relief.
Getting to keep their helmets must have boosted Team USA's patriotic mojo, because they went on to defeat the Olympic Athletes of Russia 5-0. You can next see them in the Women's Ice Hockey semi-finals on February 15!
