The first trailer for Marvel's Venom starring Tom Hardy was released today and everyone is disappointed. Everyone, that is, except the people over at Sony. They're probably thrilled that people can't stop talking about it. Though we see plenty of Hardy during the trailer, fans were disappointed that the namesake, and Spider-Man nemesis, was no where to be seen.
Of course there was plenty of buildup before the trailer was released. So, no pressure!
See for yourself if Venom meets the challenge in the trailer below. Or maybe we should say don't see for yourself.
If the trailer's intention was to get people talking, it worked:
Sony, how in the hell are you going to release a VENOM trailer that doesn't show a glimpse, even for a split-second, of, you know, VENOM!? You want people to buy this half-cooked idea you have? Show us this... #Venom #VenomMovie pic.twitter.com/IbwcAbxFI9— Adam Frazier (@AdamFrazier) February 8, 2018
But other people glimpsed the thought behind the process, or at least they were willing to cut the producers some slack:
I get some people are not quite impressed with the #Venom trailer but its a teaser and the film is still deep in post production work. We still have yet to see full Venom or #Carnage. The cast is too good for me to take dump on this film I am seeing some already are. pic.twitter.com/5QjTLwOJtR— Geek Vibes Nation 🖖 (@GeekVibesNation) February 8, 2018
And still others thought it was genius:
Lmao the trailer for the Venom movie does not show Tom Hardy as Venom at all, truly genius marketing well done Sony— cowboy online (@snoogering) February 8, 2018
The Venom teaser is fantastic. It is a "teaser" not a "trailer." It shows fans the tone of the film complete with a solid voice-over, good shots, and doesn't spoil any plot all while holding the mysterious title character back for the time being.
