FBI agents Peter Strzok and Lisa Page were both removed from Robert Mueller's special counsel investigation after text messages surfaced in which they spoke ill of President Trump, a subject of the investigation. On Wednesday, February 7, it was also revealed that in September 2016, then-President Barack Obama wanted to "know everything" about the investigation of Russian election meddling.
NEW: Page wrote to Strzok on Sept. 2, 2016 about prepping Comey because "potus wants to know everything we're doing." Senate investigators told Fox News this text raises questions about Obama's personal involvement in the Clinton email investigation.https://t.co/JpVo9bQo0b— Brooke Singman (@brookefoxnews) February 7, 2018
Liberals believe President Obama was within his rights to ask for a full briefing on Russia's alleged interference. Conservatives, however, claim Obama's request was a sign of corruption and favoritism towards his own party.
Liberals: No biggie. Conservatives: Huge news!
Newly revealed text messages between Peter Strzok and Lisa Page include an exchange about preparing talking points for then-FBI Director James Comey to give to President Obama, who wanted “to know everything we’re doing." - This is big!— Ryan Fournier (@RyanAFournier) February 7, 2018
Conservatives are passing around a video from April 2016 in which Barack Obama promises that candidates would be treated equally by the justice department and that "no one is above the law."
This video is the conservative version of "receipts":
"I guarantee that there is no political influence in any investigation conducted by the Justice Department or the FBI, not just in this case but in any case. Period. Nobody gets treated differently when it comes to the Justice Dept because nobody is above the law.” -Obama 4/10/16 pic.twitter.com/hMRtI1IAr0— Nick Short 🇺🇸 (@PoliticalShort) February 7, 2018
Liberals believe that, since Obama requested this information days before confronting President Putin and laying sanctions down on Russia, it was only logical that he wanted all the facts.
It's a fair point, considering Obama wasn't the subject of the investigation:
Reporters confirmed that Obama wanted to "know everything" about the Russian probe — not Clinton's email investigation:
Fact-Check from WSJ: Text messages from 2016 show preparation to brief Obama about Russia’s election interference, according to associates of the FBI employees involved, not, as a Republican senator suggested, meddling by Obama in the Clinton email probe. https://t.co/GYhNOPAOij— Kyle Griffin (@kylegriffin1) February 7, 2018
Of course, that didn't stop President Trump from weighing in, in true Presidential fashion:
Many people on Twitter disagreed with the President:
10:55 AM: Sean Hannity tweets bombshell.— Morten Øverbye (@morten) February 7, 2018
11:00 AM: President receives his daily intelligence brief.
11:08 AM: Fox News airs segment about FBI text messages.
11:10 AM: President tweets «NEW FBI TEXTS ARE BOMBSHELLS!».
Twitter user Judd Legum laid out the entire situation for anyone who was interested:
1. If you are watching Fox News this morning or reading any right-wing website you may have heard about a new BOMBSHELL report that exposes serious misconduct by BARACK OBAMA.— Judd Legum (@JuddLegum) February 7, 2018
Well, I looked into it, and it is a complete fraud. https://t.co/ERFGVMo6Dh pic.twitter.com/ebuJsooSAM
3. It's not complicated to explain why this is wrong. The Clinton email investigation was closed by Comey in July. Same texts show the FBI didn't even become aware of the emails on Weiner's laptop until Sept 28.— Judd Legum (@JuddLegum) February 7, 2018
These texts are from Sept 2. https://t.co/4r33UxtdtG
He claims Obama was simply doing his job:
Even if President Obama had been trying to stay informed about the Clinton email scandal, many liberals on Twitter believe there is still a double standard at play. Conservatives have no idea what the other side is talking about, claiming Barack Obama was a corrupt President.
In the end, we'll all have to decide for ourselves.
So Obama said he wants to be kept informed of the status of the FBI’s investigation into HRC’s email drama.— Bradley P. Moss (@BradMossEsq) February 7, 2018
Trump demanded loyalty oaths from the people investigating his campaign, and tried to get Comey to back off Flynn.
But it’s the former that’s the scandal.
