In honor of Ellen Degeneres' 60th birthday, Michelle Obama stopped by for her first public interview since her husband, Barack Obama, left office. Though most of Ellen's day was filled with celebration (as well it should be), she also expressed some trepidation about the state of our country to the former first lady:
I personally feel frightened. I feel like the world is a very scary place right now.
Unsurprisingly, Michelle knew the exact right thing to say:
People are afraid but then there are people who feel good about the direction of the country, so that's what makes this country complicated.
Hey everyone! I had so much fun celebrating Ellen’s 60th birthday! It felt like old times at @TheEllenShow. Mrs. Obama continued:
We are this mosh pit of society. But the thing we have to remember, and the thing I learned in the eight years that I was in the White House, is that what we do every day in our lives, the good things that we do — we show empathy, we care for each other, we do have a lot in common — that's what it means to lead with hope and not fear.
It's easy to forget how similar we are when SOME PEOPLE insist on splitting us apart:
That's all we have is hope. Forget what they're saying in Washington. That's not necessarily who we are, we know who we are.
Michelle Obama doesn't disappoint!
And as if that clip wasn't heart-warming enough, Obama also gave Ellen some pretty unforgettable birthday gifts, including a Chia Pet who looks pretty similar to a certain former President. Happy Birthday, Ellen, and thanks for sharing Michelle's birthday gift with us!
