Model Yves Mathieu made quite an impression at the Women's March with his powerful message in support of trans women.
After reading about the deaths of trans women that had seen little or no media attention, Mathieu decided to become their advocate. Every Wednesday he would post about trans women on his Instagram, specifically women who had been murdered and not reported on in the news. So when the time came for the Women's March, Mathieu took to the streets with a sign reading, "Trans Women Too!"
I made this sign because trans women are women, trans women matter, and trans women are here, and trans women should be acknowledged and included.
And Twitter users loved him for it:
preach to this dude for being so well spoken and supporting trans women in a march that was aimed at people with female genitalia like i have so much respect for this dude— ikea battery (@cabeIIosmoves) January 26, 2018
Mathieu says he made the sign because he knew trans women would not be represented at the march.
Thank you!!!!!! My beautiful daughter is a trans woman 💜💕💜— NurseNanci (@NanciRabideauFi) January 26, 2018
Of course not everyone was so supportive:
Social scientists are going to be able to some interesting studies on the ease with which some people are willing to suspend all logic and ration if it makes them popular with a particular group. Men aren’t women. And dogs aren’t cats. And mice aren’t birds...— Dr. Dina McMillan (@drdina1) January 26, 2018
Trans women are not women. Period.I repeat, they.are.NOT.women. I strongly stand by that. Women have vaginas, they have a uterus, they grow, carry & give birth to another human. They have populated the world. Men have neither, & they can’t do either=NOT WOMEN!!!but MEN.Period.— ~Cherie Rouge~ (@Scorpian_Mom) January 25, 2018
This woman's sign expresses the sentiment Mathieu has been fighting against:
Fortunately, Mathieu isn't the only one willing to speak up for trans women:
"Perhaps the point of the women’s march is to draw attention to just how oppressive women actually are, especially white cisgender women to transgender women, especially of color, and to show that the future isn’t female, it’s nonbinary and brown."— INTO (@Into) January 22, 2018
