Allison Janney has never been nominated for an Oscar before, and she just got her first nod for her role as LaVona, Tonya Harding's abusive mother, in the film I, Tonya. Janney had plenty of people to celebrate with. A group of her family and friends flew in from New York to surprise her. And there was one other person who surprised her with a celebratory text — Tonya Harding. It may seem odd or painful to celebrate a woman's portrayal of your abuser, but the pair don't hold any animosity towards one another.
In fact, their relationship is quite pleasant!
Allison called in to the PeopleTV nominations show and revealed that Tonya texted her congratulations. The text read:
You're going to the big top, girl!
Allison described the text as "very sweet." Twitter had some thoughts about Tonya and Allison, and how amazing Janney was as LaVona.
Can't imagine what it must be like for Tonya Harding to see/watch Allison Janney channel her emotionally and physically abusive mother and then be genuinely happy that her performance is so acclaimed.— LaRAWRa (@twinkiesandwine) January 23, 2018
Mary & Octavia don’t have a chance in that category, so save the frustration & disappointment now 😂. Allison Janney is a lock to win after transforming herself into Tonya Harding’s messed up momma....— Slim Belushi (@AmazonCan) January 23, 2018

#FilmReview I, Tonya surprised me. Terrific acting. Margot Robbie agains proves she can flat out act, Allison Janney is deservedly front runner for best supporting actress though Metcalf should be close with her (Ladybird). Makes you feel sorta bad for tonya harding. Rough life— Mike Pilch (@mdpilch) January 23, 2018
Janney's performance was so convincing that this happened:
Awkwaaaard. Our congratulations to Janney on her Oscar-nom, her amazing performance, and her ability to rock a bowl cut like nobody's business. We salute you, Allison!
