On Tuesday, January 23, Instagram issued a game-changing update that brings it in line with frequent competitor Snapchat, while also putting it a small step ahead.
Instagram users will now be able to add GIF stickers to their stories on their iPhone and Android apps!
The GIF support is made possible through Giphy, one of the largest GIF directories on the internet. To use the stickers, simply go to the sticker menu in your Instagram app, look for the the GIF option, and go GIF crazy!
While many can't help but notice Instagram is once again following in Snapchat's footsteps (Snapchat added GIF stickers last year), it's also hard to miss the larger directory of stickers available to Instagram users. The competition continues to heat up!
So I put a GIF on Instagram , I didn’t know a GIF, couldn’t go on Instagram ! I was promptly told by my daughter, I said What’s a GIF!! So apparently my video on IG ( a GIF) went on as a still picture!!! But I don’t care, it’s to complicated at times if u like the still GIF ty !!— Kevin Schlehuber (@BB19KEVIN) January 24, 2018
Instagram has also announced that an upcoming update will allow users to post pictures and videos of any size to their stories. That's right — even horizontal photos! If you ask us, the change can't come soon enough. We want to shoot out those horizontal GIF stickers ASAP!
