Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell's resemblance to a turtle has not gone unnoticed by people in the past.
Now Nevada Democrats are taking notice. In what many people perceive as a shot at the Senate Majority Leader, the Democratic State Party in Nevada unveiled their new mascot for the 2018 elections.
Meet Mitch McTurtle:
According to a Harvard-Harris Poll conducted in August, Mitch McConnell had the lowest approval ratings of any known politician, at only 19%. This makes him a perfect cudgel for Democrats who are trying to rest this Nevada seat from Senator Dean Heller. The state was won by Hillary Clinton in 2016 and many view Heller as one of the most vulnerable Republican incumbents.
Twitter users had feelings about the new mascot. Most people were not having it:
They're not wrong, to be honest:
Going out on a limb here, but guessing a strongly messaged campaign centering on higher wages, better health care, jobs and protecting immigrants is going to play better with Democratic voters in Nevada than a guy in a turtle costume.— Michael (@MichaelArtz) January 16, 2018
Cause making fun of people is a surefire way to sway them to your side! People actually get paid for these ideas?! 🤦🏻♂️— Garrett Lepire (@SellingCarson) January 16, 2018
One could argue that President Trump got elected with a similar strategy, but still:
How hard is it to fucking run a campaign.— Matt 🌹 (@Talint) January 17, 2018
"As senate majority leader, Mitch McConnell is stealing from you to make himself richer."
"lol Mitch McConnell looks like a turtle"
So far, this doesn't seem to be working out very well.
