A woman from Edgewater, New Jersey, Oksana Zaharov, stopped into a store in New York and asked the clerk for a $1 lottery ticket. When the clerk accidentally gave her a $10 ticket Zaharov "felt bad" for the clerk and bought the more expensive scratch off.
The mother of two, said about the day:
“When the clerk handed me the wrong ticket I felt bad so I decided to just go ahead and buy it. I actually used the ticket as a bookmark for a couple weeks before I decided to scratch it.”
When she finally scratched the ticket she couldn't believe what she'd won. $5 million!
"I never win anything, I was sure the ticket was fake. It wasn’t until I brought it into the office that I knew it was for real."
The winnings will be distributed over 20 years, with annual payments of $180,000. Zaharov said she and her family were planning a trip to the Bahamas, but mostly she is excited for her children's future.
"They will have a loan-free college education."
People wondered if the winner was going to give some money to the cashier.
Let's hope Zaharov and her family enjoy their newfound wealth.
