K-pop fans are among the most loyal and passionate in the world. Their community was shaken to the core yesterday with the announcement that lead singer of the group Shinee, Kim Jong-hyun, had passed away. According to reports, he was found unresponsive in an apartment in Seoul, and pronounced dead later at a hospital. News of his death was soon followed with news of a suicide note, in which he confessed to feeling as if he was "broken from the inside."

Hard for one company to make mental health a priority in a country &society that doesn't, you know? Hopefully this sparks a change in SK regarding depression &mental health, leads to ppl not feeling ashamed (or made to feel) for getting help, opening up, talking about things 😔😔— #RIPJonghyun 😔💔 (@keandric) December 18, 2017
my heart is broken!HOW can we protect others from depression?!visits to psychologist should be must, when people live under this much pressure - being idol!companies should look after their mental health! we dont expect them to be happy 24/7, nor should companies pressure them! pic.twitter.com/XL3nT9T6XE— Oracle 🔮 (@narutoflower) December 18, 2017
Jonghyun’s tragic death is a reminder that South Korea has some of the highest suicide rates in the world and that men overall are significantly higher at risk of suicide than women. In some countries 8 out of 10 suicides are men. It’s an epidemic. #Jonghyun #ripjonghyun pic.twitter.com/WHKtNCRdbK— Jacques 🥀 (@arcadeyblog) December 18, 2017
