Former Vice President Joe Biden stopped by for a chat on the talk show The View to discuss his new memoir Promise Me, Dad. The book chronicles his son Beau's battle with glioblastoma. Things took a personal turn when co-host Meghan McCain brought up her father, Senator John McCain, who is fighting a battle with the same brain cancer as Biden's son.

When Meghan became choked up, saying it was hard for her to finish the book, Biden moved over to comfort her:

There’s a lot of things happening, there’s breakthroughs that are occurring now, it could happen tomorrow. So there is hope. And if anyone can make it, your dad — her dad is one of my best friends.

The former VP went on to tell McCain:

You may remember when you were a little kid, your dad took care of my Beau. Your dad ... became friends with Beau. And Beau talked about your dad’s courage — not about illness — but about his courage.

While holding Meghan's hand, Biden continued to talk about his friendship with Senator McCain:

Her dad goes after me, hammer and tong. We’re like two brothers who were somehow raised by different fathers because of our points of view. But I know — and I mean this sincerely — even when your dad got mad at me and said I should get the hell off the ticket — I know if I picked up the phone tonight and called John McCain and said, ‘John, I’m at 2nd and Vine in Oshkosh and I need your help,’ he’d get on a plane and come.

With so much political animosity in the country, it was a refreshing moment of human connection and compassion:

Meghan tweeted her appreciation for Biden's kind words during a difficult time:

Other people felt moved to share their own stories:

Senator McCain reached out to thank Biden for his support:
