An Innocent Lynx Was Just Killed, And People Are Appropriately Furious

Authorities ordered the killing of an 18-month-old Eurasian lynx that had been on the loose for almost two weeks. The lynx, named Lillith, escaped an enclosure she shared with four other lynx at the Borth Wild Animal Kingdom in Ceredigion, Wales, on October 29. When the cat was spotted under a caravan in a holiday park, the Ceredigion city council contracted a team of marksmen.

The Ceredigion Council issued the following statement regarding Lillith's death:

People were understandably outraged:

Many people questioned the authorities' decision not to use a tranquilizer:

Tracy Tweedy, co-owner of the zoo that was Lillith's home, had this to say:

We in no way agreed to or participated in the shooting of our baby Lynx. We are truly devastated and outraged that this happened.  They managed to locate and shoot her within 24 hours so why didn’t they do that at the very beginning and just tranquilize her.  You do not get to shoot a cat for no reason. She was no threat to anyone. It should never have happened and we will fight them on it every step of the way.
