Las Vegas Shooter's Brother Makes Comments To The Media On His Shock And Surprise

Stephen Paddock, a retired accountant and amateur poker player, opened fire with an automatic rifle from a hotel room overlooking a country music festival in Las Vegas, killing more than 50 people and wounding another 500. It is the worst mass shooting in modern American history, and it took Paddock's family completely by surprise.

Paddock's brother Eric told CNN that the news was like hearing "an asteroid fell out of the sky":

When asked whether these actions seemed in character for his brother, Eric Paddock responded:

He's never even drawn his gun! It makes no sense. He's never hit anybody. Never!

Twitter expressed sympathy for Eric, whose world was turned upside down by his brother's actions:

This brother's position is truly a nightmare:

Some Twitter users thought the media should give the shooter's family some space:

One notable detail that's emerged about the Stephen Paddock's family is the notoriety of his father, Benjamin Hoskins Paddock, who was on the FBI's most-wanted list from June 10, 1969 until May 5, 1977. After being arrested for robbing banks, he escaped prison in 1969 and lived on the run until 1978, when he was re-arrested in Oregon. But Eric doubts that his brother was attempting to emulate their father's criminal tendencies:

He was my brother, and it's like an asteroid fell out of the sky. We're still just completely dumbstruck.
