Twitter User Shares Unsettling Photos Of Confederate Flags At NASCAR Events

A couple of NASCAR team owners gave their drivers a stern warning: Take the knee during the National Anthem or risk being fired. Team owner Richard Petty had this to say:

"Anybody that won't stand up for the anthem ought to be out of the country. Period."

Another owner, Richard Childress, expressed similar sentiments, saying that any driver not standing for the Anthem will get a ride on a bus.  Both NASCAR CEO Brian France and  Petty endorsed Trump in the 2016 election.

When Donald Trump heard about the warning to drivers he tweeted the following.

Dale Earnhardt Jr., one of the most beloved racers in NASCAR history, fired back like a total boss.

It would be really petty to point out that Trumps tweet received 172,370 likes, while Earnhard's received 394,972. Not that anyone is counting.

So the question has to be asked: With all this patriotism for the American flag and National Anthem in NASCAR, why are there so many Confederate flags flying? Aren't those two things diametrically opposed considering they were symbols fighting on opposite sides of the Civil War?

Twitter user Shane Morris set out to get to the bottom of this.

NASCAR released an official statement hugging the middle of the road as close as it could.
