Before she moved to Los Angeles, Chloe Wang was a Chinese pop star.

Once in America, she adopted the surname Bennet to increase her visibility in Hollywood. For four years she's starred in Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Bennet praised actor Ed Skrein on Instagram for turning down a role he wasn't culturally authentic for in the upcoming Hellboy sequel. But one of the commenters attacked Bennet for changing her last name.

Bennet didn't appreciate being called out for it:

The actress has talked about her name change before.

In a 2016 interview with Teen Vogue, Bennet said:

When I first got to L.A. I was told I wasn't 'white enough to be the lead or Asian enough to be the best friend.' And I thought that was true! It’s crazy, in hindsight, how racist that really was, and I accepted it and thought that it was normal and okay.

The second season of S.H.I.E.L.D established Bennet's character as half Asian and half white.

While the cultural designation does nothing to add or diminish her character's role in the show, it's still an optimistic step towards mixed-race representation in the industry.
