Inspector Darren certainly had his work cut out for him and it wasn't going well.
In an attempt to soothe public concerns over potholes, the Cheshire West and Chester City Council in the UK sent Darren out to measure a pothole. Using a level and a ruler Darren set out to ease everyone's mind. It failed spectacularly, and Twitter loved every moment.
Cheshire West's original tweet was deleted but here is a screenshot:
The council posted the photo to show the pothole was under 50mm and therefore they would not be fixing it right away.
People immediately noticed that Darren's measuring technique was a little off.
He’s not even measuring from the road level, his plank isn’t long enough because the pot hole is so big.— Alistair Carruthers (@Alistair_C) March 7, 2018
This was the moment for the council to say, "Perhaps you are right. We will measure again."
But noooo...Instead they tweeted:
Hi, it might not be clear from the photo but the spirit level is resting on the road surface, this was amongst a chain of shallow defects all less than 50mm— Cheshire West (@Go_CheshireWest) March 7, 2018
That's all it took for Twitter to let loose:
And that was just the beginning.
Soon Darren and his measuring stick were the latest meme.
It seems Darren is now an internet celebrity and people can't get enough.
Could you help transform the north by first purchasing Darren and new longer level please— Marcus Ingram (@marcus_ingramuk) March 11, 2018
It was good to see Darren didn't let all this fame go to his head.
He was back at work.
It's possible Darren's fame is getting a bit out of control.
Random Twitter’er here from Missouri, USA. Darren is famous and everything about this pothole situation over there in Cheshire is absolutely hilarious.— Matt Newbold (@MattBold9) March 11, 2018
Darren’s gone into witness protection for his own safety I have heard 😂— Joe Joinson (@JoeJoinson) March 11, 2018
If we know Darren, he'll show up again to defend us against those pesky potholes.
