Kim Kardashian West was ripped into after she posted a picture of her "Bo Derek braids" where she referenced the actor and the famous hairstyle she wore in the 1979 film, 10.
The hairstyle commonly known as corn rows or Fulani braids originated in the African culture, but we aren't so sure that Kim knew this.
They are called Fulani braids or some may even say corn rows. You could of called them either one but you called them "Bo derek" giving credit to a white woman for a black style knowing you already catch heat for culture vulturing. #KimKardashian #culturalvul pic.twitter.com/aIF4NzJ9rw— Roses🌷 (@Teenagenature) January 29, 2018
Many people felt that Kim's clumsy reference and ignorance of the hairstyles origin was a jab at black women.
Kim K calling her cornrows "Bo Derek" braids is just as, if not more infuriating as when I wore my name plate necklace to work and someone called it a "Carrie Bradshaw" necklace.— freddie ransome (@Ransome_Note) January 29, 2018
She thinks that by saying her inspiration is Bo Derek, then it isn’t appropriation.— Kelechi Okafor (@kelechnekoff) January 29, 2018
Yuck. She’s so urgh.
“Oh no these are boxer braids”— Kelechi Okafor (@kelechnekoff) January 29, 2018
“Oh these are Bo Derek braids”
Anything to avoid dealing with admitting she’s inspired by Black women.
Erasure is real.
Denying that color exists is denying the history of events that led to where we are today. Race is an issue. Acknowledge it, and be equitable. Whites shouldn't enable systems of oppression simply because the topic of race makes them uncomfortable.— wizgicianbrb (@wizgicianbrb) January 29, 2018
Others had a different point of view on the matter.
Is it at least possible that she was simply copying Bo Derrick because she admired the woman. I'm willing to bet "race" never crossed her mind. I just don't understand. Why get mad because race is a non-issue to her? I thought that was the goal, to be colorblind?— TheoryofDecadence (@DecadenceStore) January 29, 2018
There is no denying that Kim's post was ignorant, especially because Bo Derek was not the only celebrity wearing this hairstyle.
Exactly! I could care less that she's wearing braids. It's the fact she really renamed the braids and gave credit to a white woman for the braids like black women wasn't wearing the style before hand. I bet you a black woman braided Bo Derek's hair anyway.— Roses🌷 (@Teenagenature) January 29, 2018
Kim, we know you are the queen of social media, but give credit where credit is due. With great power comes great responsibility gurl!
