You may be a J.K. Simmons fan because of his role in Whiplash, or in the new Justice League, or Zootopia, or Gravity Falls, but chances are you were a fan of his long before he became a household name. Since the late 1990's, Simmons has been the voice of the simple but loveable yellow M&M in candy commercials.
Stephen Colbert, host of Late Night, had Simmons on the show to promote the upcoming movie Counterpart, but got a bit distracted by the minutiae of embodying an M&M. The host asked some amazing questions about the enigmatic yellow candy, and Simmons was more than happy to oblige.
Apparently, the design for the character was partially inspired by Simmons himself. Gesturing at his own face, Simmons told Colbert:
Supposedly that also is vaguely based on this. They spent a lot of time taping us in our recording sessions.
Apparently, in Simmons' mind, Yellow is also a native to the state of Georgia. Colbert didn't linger on the small details however. People need to know: how weird is it when Simmons eats yellow M&M's? Simmons responded:
First of all, you’re assuming there’s a weird cannibalism there. I just appreciate the diversity and dive in and grab a handful
