Smart phones allow people to have a camera on them at all times, which means the odds of capturing the perfect moment are a lot better than they used to be. A young boy was returning from a fishing trip off the coast of Vancouver Island when that perfect moment happened. Dawson Gage, 11, was in prime position when a humpback whale breached right behind him.
Nootka Wilderness Lodge's fishing guide, Davis Rennie, was the cameraman who caught it all.
He was pretty excited. He thought it was unbelievable and surreal. Davis [Rennie] just had his camera going and we got lucky — really lucky, actually. [Dawson] really nailed it. We shut the engine off and just got to watch him come out of the water about three or four times and make his way toward the open ocean. It was pretty exhilarating. Dawson was pretty pumped.
