Country superstar Keith Urban knows what it is like to relapse on drugs and alcohol. The singer, who is married to actress Nicole Kidman, has spoken openly about the time he famously relapsed in 2006, only months after their wedding.
Now he is sharing some of that advice with Demi Lovato who was recently taken to a Los Angeles hospital after a drug relapse of her own.
Urban appeared on an Australian talk show and offered this advice from his own recovery:
Just have good people around her and a willingness to want to live a different way if that’s what she wants to do. It’s all up to her.
Urban has been open about speaking to his path of recovery, telling People Magazine in 2007:
It was like if I don’t choose this moment to do the right thing and do something that’s going to give me life, all of the things I’m scared of losing, I’m going to lose anyway.
I’m just alcoholically wired. I wasn’t at my full potential and I was living a very small life. My life was getting smaller and smaller and that is how I kept it manageable. I was lucky I had a very loving wife. [Getting sober] has freed me up creatively.
For now, Lovato remains in the hospital following some complications.
Lovato continues to receive support from her fans.
If it wasn't for Demi Lovato being vocal about mental health when I was in middle school, I wouldn't be the mental health advocate that I am today. She's helped me become educated about mental health and empathetic towards others. I send her nothing but love and support.— gab (@gabby_frost) July 24, 2018
We wish Lovato the best as she faces this next step in her recovery process.
