In what may just be the most ridiculous bit of casting in the history of moviedom, Cher is playing Meryl Streep's mother (they're a mere three years apart in age!) in the highly anticipated sequel to 2008's Mamma Mia! but fans are already getting their money's worth from the longtime pals.
Kicking things off in style at the Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again movie’s world premiere at London’s Eventim (formerly Hammersmith) Apollo on Monday, the heavyweight acting duo met up with a quick peck on the lips; once the internet got wind of the shot—let's just say their meme was sealed with a kiss.
Fans reacted with delight and excitement, creating memes of the iconic shot:
Streep presumably (she's been conspicuously absent from the trailers) reprises her role as Donna, the hotel-owner and secret-keeping mother to Amanda Seyfried's Sophie. But this time around, Grandma's come for a visit—enter Cher as Ruby Sheridan, Donna's mother.
Cher and Streep have been friends since they starred together in 1983's Silkwood.
When asked about being cast as Meryl's mother, when she is only a few years older than Streep, Cher told People Magazine:
That doesn’t make any difference. I was thrilled to death, and it was so silly. It was great fun, and I love her [Meryl], so it was perfect. It was great, and she was hiding watching me sing, and I was so excited. I didn’t find out until afterwards — I would have been more nervous.
Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again hits theaters on Friday, June 20.
