Tina Fey's screenplay of the 2004 hit movie is getting a much-anticipated musical treatment, and Millennials, who've adopted the film's dialogue for daily discourse, are especially excited.
Karen: It's a musical — people talk and sing and move their bodies all at the same time.
Regina: They know what a musical is, Karen. They're not idiots.
Gretchen: How can you talk and sing at the same time?
If the promo is any indication, audiences are in for a riotous evening of theater.
Fey told EW she didn't expect the oft-quoted film to become such a mega hit. A progression to the stage seemed inevitable. She said:
It was probably my husband, Jeff [Richmond, a composer who worked on 30 Rock], who said, "You know what? This could work as a musical." And I trusted him to know that, having that background.
Mean Girls will have its premiere at the National Theater in Washington D.C. from Oct. 31 to Dec. 3 before opening night on Broadway at the August Wilson Theater on April 8.
