In a huge upset for establishment Democrats, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a 28-year-old progressive, beat out Rep. Joe Crowley for one of the most powerful seats in Congress. This was the first time Crowley has been challenged in the primary since 2004.
Ocasio-Cortez ran on a progressive platform similar to Bernie Sanders' during the 2016 presidential primaries. Some of the issues Ocasio-Cortez spoke about included getting corporate money out of politics, Medicare for all, and abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Ocasio-Cortez told BuzzFeed News:
When it comes to power, we can’t just be tempted by power and money alone. What we need to do is be bold enough and courageous enough to choose leadership that takes no corporate money and advances health care, education, and housing for all.
Regarding the historical win, Ocasio-Cortez’s communications director Corbin Trent added:
Holy cow, we’re elated, and simultaneously and honestly shocked. I think this says Joe was wrong — he doesn’t represent the people of the 14th District.
The 14th district where Ocasio-Cortez ran includes Queens and the Bronx. People had given her virtually no chance of victory but she proved them wrong.
