Fielding a recent question about how Russia should respond to the U.K.'s expulsion of 23 Russian diplomats following the Salisbury poisoning, British Defense Secretary Gavin Williamson responded:
What we will do is we will look at how Russia responds to what we have done. It is absolutely atrocious and outrageous what Russia did in Salisbury. We have responded to that.
Frankly, Russia should go away and should shut up
He seems to be taking his lead from President Donald Trump's dumbing down of diplomacy, with rhetoric like this on immigration:
We're rounding 'em up in a very humane way, in a very nice way. And they're going to be happy because they want to be legalized. And, by the way, I know it doesn't sound nice. But not everything is nice.
Or this comment on global warming:
The concept of global warming was created by and for the Chinese in order to make U.S. manufacturing non-competitive.
It's easy to see why people are losing faith in world leaders here and abroad.
We can add Williamson to the growing list of politicians who can't be taken seriously:
Gavin Williamson has told Russia to "go away and shut up", which my sources tell me is a strategic step up from "go to your room and think about what you've done."— Tim Stanley (@timothy_stanley) March 15, 2018
I for one salute our defence secretary for his innovative defence tactics of telling our enemies to "go away and shut up"— Jason Ashford (@jasonashford89) March 15, 2018
this is clearly the second prong of our strategy after denying the Russian people the Royals at the world cup
next step; give them the finger
People are afraid politicians like Trump, Kim Jong Un, and Williamson are leading the world into a disaster:
I wasn’t scared about the Salisbury / Russia thing. That is, not until Gavin Williamson opened his mouth and spoke like a 4-year-old (sorry 4-year-olds) who’s had his teddy bear pinched. This immature idiot, promoted way beyond his capabilities, presents a clear & present danger.— Ray Palmer (@raystratman) March 15, 2018
Unfortunately, Putin will be a lot less scared of blithering idiot Gavin Williamson than I am. How has somebody who can't even read in public been put in charge of our defence?— Silvani (@silvanitheelder) March 15, 2018
Some speculated on Putin's response:
I'm looking forward to the "I know you are, but what am I?" bit— Luke Blackall (@lukeblackall) March 15, 2018
Then the bit when they just repeat everything the other one says, one second later— Alice Jones (@alicevjones) March 15, 2018
