A large majority of faculty members at Lehigh University, located in Pennsylvania, turned out to vote in favor of revoking President Donald Trump's honorary degree, which the university awarded him in 1988.

The motion put forward for voting stated in part:

...statements made by President Trump do not meet Lehigh’s standards for respectful discourse where differences of opinion exist.
If a member of Lehigh’s on-campus community made one of these statements, he/she would be subject to disciplinary action; taken in their entirety, he/she would be at risk of dismissal.
By staying silent we are bystanders; we normalize hate speech, condone discrimination and bullying; we enable people in positions of power to corrode the foundations of civil society; and we abdicate our commitment and responsibility to uphold and sustain our core values.

Lehigh University is not the first university to revoke one of the president's honorary degrees. In 2015,  Robert Gordon University, in Scotland, stripped Trump of the the honorary doctorate of business administration for his anti-Muslim comments.

At the time the University sent out the following tweet.

Now Lehigh University is following suit with a tweet of its own.

With a followup tweet clarifying the voting numbers.

The student government was on board with the decision.

Twitter weighed in agreeing with the University's decision.

This user believed it was time to stop giving out honorary degrees.

A few suggested giving the president the kind of degree he deserves.

We will wait to see what degrees are given and what are taken away.
